Civic Ventures :: Home Civic Ventures, the organization, is an outgrowth of Marc Freedman’s book Encore and is a national nonprofit organization that works to expand the contributions of older Americans to society. The new link I found during this visit was to their section called The Next Chapter, which is an initiative to help communities create places and connections that provide those entering or in the 2nd half of life with direction and connection as they move to a path of contribution. Inside it is a Blueprint for The Next Chapter–a how-to guide for starting one up in your community. Food for thought.

Retirement Revolution: The New Reality | PBS This is most likely a temporary home for the PBS series called the Retirement Revolution. It is a terrific source for stories and viewpoints on how retirement is evolving, both from the long-term view of not just sitting back in the rocking chair to the shorter-term view of how turbulent economic times are affecting people’s plans. It contains individual stories, video clips, comments from experts on a variety of challenges facing people on the threshold of the second half of their lives. Don’t miss this. It also has links to a variety of other resources, like Civic Ventures.

www.retirementdictionary.com is a nice, quick means to look up a term related to IRA’s. Just click on the beginning letter and a list of terms will drop down, providing quick access to a brief definition. Site also serves as a source for news and articles related to IRA’s. There is also a free newsletter. Since all of my retirement savings are in employment-based 401K’s, I can’t judge how useful this one is for IRA owners. Check it out, it may be worth adding to the retirement folder in your list of web-browsing favorites.

HAPPYneuron: Brain Fitness This site sells brain fitness products (games), but also provides free games with comparative scoring to median and top quartile scores. Another interesting feature is the summary of research related to brain plasticity and cognitive fitness. Even the free games are a challenge. Try them out. Books/CD’s are a bit pricey. It does make you think about how little you use your brain in everyday habitual living. Just another way to remind yourself to use it or lose it. How many of us no longer know the phone numbers of our friends and co-workers with the advent of cell phone address books? Used to be I could spout out those numbers in a heartbeat, but I don’t bother keeping those numbers in my head. I once thought that was a good thing, as life had too much useless information you found yourself memorizing, like PIN’s and usernames and more. Now, I wonder if I shouldn’t be memorizing more? Or, I could spend time playing brain games. Brain games with competitive scoring might just become addictive. Should I be memorizing great speeches, poetry, hip-hop lyrics (maybe not the last one, but still…)?

This one, welovecostarica.com, has more information on tours, options and more Costa Rica-wise. Enjoy the hunt for affordable retirement by starting with a tourist visit. Not for everyone, but I know several people who have moped around for months wondering what to do, now that their nest egg has diminished. Some insist you can live happily in CR on social security alone. Keep your eyes open and investigate before making commitments.

With an estimated population of 40,000 US citizens, including retirees, this is an option whose time may have come for you. This site actually connects would-be career changers with mentors, who will-for a fee-show you what it feels like to actually work your “dream job.” Brian Kurtz is a career coach who created the concept, wrote a book, created the program and writes a blog on the subject. Visit this site–it is full of possibilities and you’ll come away with a new perspective. Last time I visited, there were more than 160 “mentorships” available. You can look at Brian’s blog and sign up for his free newsletter as well.

Steve is a former VP with Watson Wyatt Worldwide (an actuary by trade) who took early retirement to start his own shop, providing individual advice through his series of workshops, newsletter, books and articles. He’s not in the business of selling financial services or anything else, so he provides unvarnished advice. He has a little readiness quiz that you should try if you can. I first read his work in Retirement Weekly, Robert Powell’s eye on all things retirement provided by MarketWatch. Also has a list of resources you’ll find useful as well.

Welcome to the Individual Finance and Insurance Decisions Centre online…This site is a resource and a blog on retirement investing. I especially liked the “Are you a Stock or a Bond?” better than anything. that is the title of one blog entry. Click on the word “Blog” in the left hand column on the home page to see it. Dove into the Personal Finance Articles here and found them easy to follow and informative. U.S. residents might be a bit put off by the references to items common only to Canada(the author is Canadian), but get over it. This professor makes things understandable (for me) and I find myself learning more with each blog/article I touch.
